Powder Paneling

I had to leave work early on Tuesday to get over to the house before 5:30 at Ken’s request. Apparently he has grown tired of our late night debates so he wanted to start early this time. The night previous we re-visited the topic of wainscot paneling in the powder bath. Originally I wanted it but then changed my mind and then Ken saw a picture in a magazine and suggested that I change it back.

So, on Monday night after realizing I had left my scale at the house ages ago I struggled in trying to draw the plan and elevations of the room at 1″ scale with Robert’s warped wooden ruler. Ken wanted me to trust him in the design of the panels but after he mentioned two panels on the long walls and one on the short I knew that wasn’t an option. Even numbers make me crazy! With Robert at my side calculating numbers like a madman I came up with the perfectly balanced plan of three.

I arrived on time Tuesday evening with my sketches in hand and we began. Long story short, the already installed plumbing and electrical had to be moved but Ken liked the sketch. We went to Home Depot to choose the molding and guess what? Ken liked what they had and I did not so it was back to the house to consult the book of molding that I have been trying to force him to use this entire time. I chose something approximately 1/4″ smaller than he liked and although he was wary, agreed to pick it up.

Today I receive this text, “God I hate it when my little brat daughter is right. The molding is the perfect size.” Well, let’s just be happy that I am a perfect designer and he is a perfect contractor because look at the (almost) end result :)

I love this post. The banter between designer and contractor crax me up. All I can think is that this little house is sooooo happy that it was rescued by you! Just think how miserable it was with that icky tile. (The bench in the shower: EEEUUUUWW!)

Two short months and it’s PARTY TIME!
