You’ll notice the biggest change is at former Bath 2. We decided to make it into a powder instead of a full bath for several reasons,

1. No natural light or ventilation has made it a mold trap and entering is a highly unpleasant experience. We played around with the idea of sort of flipping the master closet and the bathroom but the space we have to work with just wouldn’t allow it.

2. With the house being so small and with just Robert and I being the only occupants we felt it wasn’t necessary to have two showers. At one point we also thought of doing away with the bathroom altogether but during one of our Interiors Studio field trips someone made the brilliant suggestion of creating a powder so the master could remain private while guests are over.

3. The smaller powder allows much more room for a larger master closet.

Another big change will be the kitchen layout. We removed the doorway from the kitchen to the hall to gain more space. We’ll be re-locating the stove here. I figured that we didn’t need such immediate access from the master, why not burn a couple calories by walking around? You’ll also notice that in the new plan the countertop extends all the way along the outside wall. I guess this used to be an eat in kitchen but I think the only ones “eating in” were the former feline occupants who had the luxury of choosing from the 39 different bowls of food that were once stationed here.

Other minor changes:

Action: Eliminate passageway from living room to hallway. Result: The feeling of a larger living room because we won’t have to leave room for foot traffic. It will also make the furniture plan more flexible.

Action: Adding pony walls to the dining room. Result: Adds architectural interest and clearly defines two distinct spaces, living and dining. This also made it possible to create the coffers in the living room. Without the header above the the short walls the coffers would have continued through the dining room and been off balance.

Action: Remove old heater from the dining room. Result: More, balanced space.

Action: Reduce double entry doors into master to a single. Result: Creates space to use as linen storage since the original space in bath 2 was removed when converted to a powder.
